DESCRIPTION:
As a companion to the 6-part news series
"Here Goes the Neighborhood,"
the WKSU web team created a special website
that was linked on the wksu.org homepage
and News page. The reports focus on social
service agencies and their relationships
with communities in Northeast Ohio, a region
that includes major metropolitan areas and
rural farmland. Along with audio for previously
broadcast segments (added as they aired),
the site also included transcripts, photo
galleries and multi-media slideshows. The
audio was downloadable as MP3 files and
available in Windows Media and Real Player
formats. While the stories were written
and produced by the professional journalists
in the WKSU newsroom, the website was primarily
created by student workers from Kent State
University, including designer Zak Kruszynski
and photographer Pat Jarrett, with assistance
from and under the supervision of senior
WKSU web staff. The Flash-built slideshows
(which used unique audio as well as audio
from the broadcast reports) created by Jarrett
add true depth to the series, telling the
story in a different way. The photo gallery
added a visual element to an audio report.
The special features on the website added
value to the news series for the WKSU audience.
