In 2001, the digital landscape looked very different. The web was still developing into a primary communication and business platform. Mobile apps had not yet transformed how people interacted with brands. Social media was in its infancy, and many of the technologies that define today's digital experiences had not yet emerged. That was the environment in which the Horizon Interactive Awards began. In 2026, Horizon celebrates its 25th annual competition and 25 years of recognizing excellence in interactive and digital media.
From Web Design to Digital Experiences
Horizon was created to recognize the people producing exceptional work for an increasingly digital world.
Over time, that definition has expanded. Websites remain an important part of the competition, but today's digital experiences can take many forms. Mobile applications, interactive installations, digital advertising, video, social media and emerging technologies have all become important parts of the digital landscape.
The competition has evolved along with that landscape. Today, Horizon recognizes work across websites, interactive experiences, advertising, mobile apps, video, social media and other digital media.
25 Years of Global Participation
The digital industry has never been limited by geography. A great website can be created by a small studio, an independent designer, a global agency or an internal creative team. The Horizon Interactive Awards has received entries from designers, developers, agencies, creative professionals and organizations around the world. Over its history, Horizon has received more than 20,000 entries from nearly all 50 U.S. states and more than 50 countries internationally. That global participation is one of the things that makes an awards program particularly interesting. The work being recognized reflects different markets, cultures, industries and approaches to digital communication.
Recognizing the People Behind the Work
Digital projects are rarely created by one person. A successful website or interactive experience may involve strategists, designers, writers, developers, photographers, videographers, animators, marketers and many others. Horizon recognizes individual projects while also providing opportunities for agencies and developers to receive recognition for their overall body of work. Agency recognition includes Best Agency, Best Agency Runner-Up and Distinguished Agency. Distinguished Agency status can be earned through multiple winning entries, giving agencies an opportunity to demonstrate consistency across their work.
How Horizon Judges Digital Work
As digital media has changed, one thing has remained consistent: good work has to do more than look good.
Horizon evaluates entries across five areas:
UX and Design
Does the experience provide a strong, intuitive and cohesive user experience?
Creativity
Does the project demonstrate originality and thoughtful creative execution?
Technical Execution
Is the solution technically sound, modern and functional?
Message
Does the experience communicate effectively with its intended audience?
Effectiveness
Does the project accomplish its intended goals?
Each area represents 20 percent of the judging criteria. Entries are evaluated by a volunteer panel of industry professionals, with end users and non-designers also included in the judging process.
Looking Toward the Next 25 Years
Artificial intelligence is already changing how digital experiences are created and used. New interaction models are emerging. Interfaces are becoming more adaptive. The boundaries between websites, applications, content and physical experiences continue to blur. For an awards program focused on digital creativity, that evolution is part of what makes the work so interesting. The goal is not to preserve a particular definition of digital media, It is to recognize exceptional work as the medium continues to evolve.
A Quarter Century of Digital Creativity
Twenty-five years is a significant milestone.
It represents thousands of projects, thousands of creative professionals and an enormous amount of change in the way people experience information, brands and technology. More importantly, it represents 25 years of people pushing digital media forward. From websites and interactive experiences to mobile applications, video, advertising and emerging technologies, the work continues to change. The Horizon Interactive Awards is proud to have been recognizing that work since 2001 and we are super excited to see how the digital landscape continues to evolve and foster the same creativity that we have seen throughout the competition's rich history of Recognizing Excellence in Interactive Media Production.
